WELCOME!!!!!

This is an Intergroup Collaboratory Project of SOC/WPS 230

Our goal is to perform a safe and active environment on this blog where people can participate in dialoge about gender and fashion. We want to expose gender polarization, socialization, and construction. Every individual performs gender different ways based upon their socialization and influences. This issue includes ideas about race, ethnicity, religion, location and more.

We hope to educate and move you from questioning yourself to sharing questions and dialogue with others. Our focus is on fashion and style and how it is associated with gender association. A goal is to get you thinking about the way you dress, do your hair, walk, and talk. We want to explore how gender is largely interconnected with how you dress yourself in the morning, for school, for work, for everyday life.

There are individuals that do not see how they dress is influenced by the gender; therefore, we plan to bring awareness by talking about gender and clothing in various different aspects. For example, politics, fashion industry, beauty, labels, music cultures. The overall power of clothing.
  • Have you ever seen a man wearing a skirt? Why can't men wear skirts? How is this linked to masculinity?
  • What do you think of women who wear power suits?
  • What do you think when you are getting dressed?
  • Why do you dress the way you do?
  • What makes girls want to wear pink or things that are sparkly? Why are genders associated with color?
  • Is it because they are pressured by their peers, the media, want to impress the opposite sex?
  • Why do boys wear jerseys or baggy pants? Why can't women dress masculine?
  • What is feminine and masculine?
  • What makes people think that is what their gender is supposed to look like?
Come EXPLORE !!!!
Feel free to respond to this. Let's remember that tis is a safe space. We encourage positive thinking. Please refrain from using words that are offensive.

-I've seen bag pipers wear kilts. I don't think there is anything wrong with a man wearing a skirt. In society now, however, a man wearing a skirt in some way decreases his level of masculinity.

-Go, Girl.

-Do I feel comfortable?

- I dress in a way that makes me feel comfortable.
-I am not sure. I don't wear pink or sparkly things too much. It may because they feel more feminine in them.

-I think peers and media do add to the pressure of pleasing the opposite sex but I'm sure that isn’t the entire reason.

-Girls have the option and they can dress that way if they want to but I am sure that society deems this unattractive or less feminine.

-A view conjured up to identify what a woman should be and what a man should be.
-Society, the environment, people, culture etc
those are my answers

Only kilts. I just personally, in terms of fashion, skirts does nothing for a man's figure. It makes their legs look lumpy and ugly.

-What do you think of women who wear power suits?
To work? Sure, it's a professional look and probably more comfortable to move in than skirts.

-What do you think when you are getting dressed?
How do I look? Am I comfortable? Do the clothes enhance my figure?

-Why do you dress the way you do?
I like my personal sense of style, the way I dress represents some of my personalities.

-What makes girls want to wear pink or things that are sparkly? Why are genders associated with color?
Is it because they are pressured by their peers, the media, want to impress the opposite sex?
I do not personally like pink or sparkly apparel. I associate that with little girls. I don't know if I can take a grown adult (male or female) seriously if they were sparkly pink clothes. It looks childish to me, regardless of gender.

-Why do boys wear jerseys or baggy pants? Why can't women dress masculine?
Jerseys represent their sports views, it's a way for men to show their athletic interests. I've seen women wear clothes larger than their size or jerseys. I've seen many girls rock the sporty look and it works great.

-What is feminine and masculine?
What makes people think that is what their gender is supposed to look like?
Femininity in my own words is a way for women to be flirtatious on their own. If a woman feels sexy and flirty in her clothes then she's being feminine, because it is clearly to attract attention of others.

Masculinity is more rough around the edges for men. For some reason, I feel they have the pressure to keep up this look where they must be into sports, drink beer, life weights, be a little scruffy sometimes. A lot of men get made fun of when they don't necessarily fit in that category.

I suppose the media highly affects what's the look for men and women. How else do others judge what's in and what's not?

I've never seen a man wearing a skirt, but if I were to, honestly I would assume he was gay, but there's nothing wrong with that. But a Skirt would definitely lower a man's masculinity.

-What do you think of women who wear power suits?

They're professional, powerful and successful women. Seem important and not scared to come off as masculine.

-What do you think when you are getting dressed?

Do I look alright? Am I comfortable?

-Why do you dress the way you do?

I dress in a way that makes me feel comfortable, and appropriate for the occasion. I dress how I like.

-What makes girls want to wear pink or things that are sparkly? Why are genders associated with color? Is it because they are pressured by their peers, the media, want to impress the opposite sex?

I like pink clothes in general, not only for women. I think men look nice in a pink button down. As for sparkly clothing, that would be for young girls only in my opinion. The gender color association starts at birth, so it's out of our control. Baby girls normally wear pink and boys wear blue. But I think the pressure from media applies to females more so than men.

-Why do boys wear jerseys or baggy pants? Why can't women dress masculine?

Jerseys and baggy jeans are naturally seen as masculine so a lot of men wear them to maintain their high level of masculinity. A woman could more easily get away with wearing men's clothing than a man could wearing women's clothing, but in either case, that person would probably be assumed to be gay or have gender confusion, even if that may not be the case.

-What is feminine and masculine?
What makes people think that is what their gender is supposed to look like?

How the genders are supposed to act, how they should dress and how they should appear to society.
The media and society affect what men and women look like and so do clothing stores. If you go to a women's department you won't find ties(or other stereotypical men's clothing) and if you go to the men's department you will not find skirts(or other "women's clothing.") So the stores influence what people wear and make people masculine/feminine depending on their sex.
